Home Invasion Stopped by Armed Father

Elmore County, Alabama — A man was shot attempting to commit a home invasion in the Flatwood Community early Monday morning.

According to Elmore County Sheriff, Bill Franklin, The homeowner was at home asleep with his wife and young child at around 5 a.m. when he heard banging coming from the front door. He armed himself with a 9mm handgun and went to investigate.

When the victim arrived at the door, he found a neighbor, 39-year-old Charles Bowne, confronting him. Bowne told the victim to “Give me your s**t,” then reached his hand down to a pocket.

Fearing that Bowne was making a move towards a weapon, the victim fired 4-5 rounds of 9mm at him. The suspect was struck by the gunfire in the head, arm, shoulder and left leg.

The homeowner immediately called 911 and officers arrived to take over. Paramedics transported Bowne to a helicopter, and he was flown to Montgomery Hospital where he is listed in critical condition.

Sheriff Franklin said Bowne was found to have a crack pipe hidden in his sock. Bowne had been to prison in Indiana, and had at least one other confrontation with a neighbor that the Sheriff’s Office could confirm.

While the Sheriff said the case was sent to be reviewed by a Grand Jury per the law, no charges have been filed against the homeowner at this time for shooting the suspect.

“We don’t have that many home invasions in Elmore County,’’ he said. “It’s not every morning you wake up at 4:55 a.m. to somebody inside your front door. That’s pretty rough.”
